Wilson Golf, the brand that has won more Majors with its irons than any other (61), has modernised one of its most iconic clubs with the release of the new Wilson Staff Model blade irons.
The Staff Model irons had a debut to remember with new Staff player Gary Woodland the first to play the prototype irons with great success last month. In his first event at the QBE Shootout in the Bahamas, Woodland made a hole-in-one on a 202-yard Par 3. Just three weeks later, at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui, Woodland led the field in Greens in Regulation, with an impressive 87.5% for the week.
The brand has a rich history of forged blade irons, many of which have been played by game’s greats and the Staff Model iron is based on the classic, timeless design seen through the years.
Tour Advisory Staff member and multiple PGA Tour winner Brendan Steele had direct input into the design of the new blade. His hands-on approach has been critical to the development of new Wilson golf products recently, which will continue after Steele officially extend his longstanding relationship with the brand for three more years, through 2021.
The Staff Model irons utilise a shape similar to that of the popular FG Tour 100 iron – used by many Wilson Tour players – while retaining the Fluid Feel Hosel construction, which helps to move weight and enhance feel. The new Staff Model blade also a milled face which provides players with improved control and feel. The forged 8620 carbon steel is combined with a high polish mirror finish to give the blades a premium finish.
After racking up two PGA Tour victories playing the FG Tour 100 irons, Steele went collaborated with the Wilson LABS team to assist in the development of the new Staff Model irons. The American challenged the team at Wilson to create a more modern aesthetic, without sacrificing performance. Steele felt it was crucial to keep the execution consistent and was eager to incorporate his feedback on design, specifically maintaining a thinner top line at address. After two years of development, the new Staff Model blades were finally brought to life.
“To be able to provide my insight on the next generation on FG Tour 100 irons was an experience I’ll never forget,” said Steele. “We crafted the new Staff Model irons to have a similar look as the FG Tour 100’s, which was vital as I continue to evaluate changes to my equipment,” he added.
“Through precise performance and visually pleasing aesthetics, the Staff Model irons combine the look and feel demanded by today’s best players,” said Jon Pergande, Global Innovation Manager at Wilson Golf. “Brendan’s influence on these irons had huge impact and with the phenomenal expertise of the Wilson LABS team, we knew these irons were going to be an extremely polished product,” he added.
Available in the Spring, the Staff Model irons come fitted with True Temper Dynamic Gold Shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet Grips. Available on Right and left hand options at the following RRP’s £899 / €1,099 (3-PW).
