Two Wilson Staff players had reason to celebrate last weekend as England’s Anthony Wall defeated current Scottish Open champion Alex Noren 1 Up in the final of the Paul Lawrie Match Play event at Archerfield Links in Scotland.

It was 41-year-old Anthony’s second Tour victory and came 431 events after his first in South Africa in 2000. The gap between the two wins sets a European Tour record and surpasses the previous high of 278 events held by the late Ryder Cup legend Christy O’Connor Jnr.

It was also the second time that former Open champion Paul Lawrie has hosted his Match Play tournament sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management, which is now an established and popular event on the European Tour calendar.

Both players use Wilson Staff FG Tour irons and PMP wedges and Wall gave a masterclass in accurate iron play to defeat the Swedish favourite in the final round, as 16mph gusts of wind made it difficult to control the ball from the fairways and on the greens.

Anthony, who has been a Wilson Staff player for most of his professional career, was almost speechless at the close.  “It just feels amazing and I cannot tell you how happy I am,” he said. “I felt calm all week and just found something with my putting which obviously made a massive difference.”

During his route to the title, Anthony had overcome South African Haydn Porteous when he chipped in for an eagle, and compatriot Oliver Fisher, who he defeated at the fourth extra hole.
